Sustainability in the modern context is the ability to create harmony between nature and invention. I like to think of my art as the perfect balance of this; my use of natural metals, in an acrylic base, composed and processed in a manner that is contemporary but maintains it’s natural metal origins.
Nature’s influence such as temperature, moisture, and light dictate the oxidation process in my paintings. As an artist I can set a composition, force the rust and patina to process but the absolute outcome is determined by nature.
I became inspired to create art using metal paints while living in downtown San Diego in the late 90’s as it was going thru a revival. Rusted old metal doors and the repurposing of materials where hundred-year-old building once stood offset much of the stark modern architecture. I started collecting and decorating with grungy metal things, like tractor wheels, water faucet spigots and iron fire buckets. It was the discovery of metal paints that I could manipulate and compose into works of art when I knew I had found my balance of modern art and nature.
